PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis)
PEP is a medication you can take after you’ve been exposed to HIV that can prevent you from becoming HIV-positive. It must be taken within 72 hours of exposure.
What is PEP?
PEP, or Post-Exposure Prophylaxis, is a daily pill you take for 28 days if you think you’ve been exposed to HIV. The most common ways to be exposed to HIV are through anal or vaginal sex or by sharing needles.
PEP must be started within 72 hours (3 days) after you may have been exposed to HIV. When taken as prescribed, PEP is highly effective at reducing your risk of contracting HIV.
