Vivent Health Denounces Passage of Ban on Gender-Affirming Care for Youth in Texas

The Texas Legislature just passed SB14, another disgraceful attack on the rights of trans youth in Texas. This legislation will forcibly remove kids from best practice medical care simply for who they are.

Decades of clinical experience and research has repeatedly upheld the safety of gender-affirming care for transgender individuals. This legislation contradicts the broad consensus of medical professionals, including the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) and American Academy of Pediatrics, that have overwhelmingly agreed age-appropriate gender-affirming care is safe, necessary, and life-saving.

“We are deeply disappointed that Texas legislators have once again prioritized making life harder for trans kids instead of tackling the many real issues impacting Texans today. In denying access to this lifesaving care, state lawmakers are inserting themselves into decisions that should be made between a family and their doctor,” said Brandon Hill, Interim President and CEO of Vivent Health, a leading provider of HIV prevention, care and support. “SB14 will worsen the already unacceptable health disparities impacting LGBTQ+ communities, especially trans people, and will put trans youth in the state at greater risk of self-harm and suicide.”
