What are affirmations?

Affirmations are positive statements that can help challenge negative thoughts. The inner dialog we have with ourselves can have a major impact on how we feel no matter what activity we are doing.  When added to a normal exercise routine, repeating positive statements can help us feel better, happier, and stronger.

Let’s face it, sometimes exercising can be hard.  We don’t always have the motivation or willpower it takes to create healthy habits.  But we do know the body-mind connection is real.  And that words are powerful.  Let’s use the power of affirmations and see how it can help us feel better about ourselves, increase self-esteem, and overall feelings of wellbeing.

Try whispering some of these positive words to yourself the next time you are going for a walk or exercising:

  • “I can do this”
  • “Self-love is my superpower”
  • “Today, I am achieving greatness”
  • “I am strong”
  • “I am proud of myself”
  • “You are already doing it!”
  • “I’ve got this”
  • “I am unstoppable”
  • “Every step makes me stronger”

Affirmations have been shown to affect areas in our brain that make us more likely to create positive change when it comes to our health. Studies have been done linking affirmations to increased feelings of self-worth, performance and motivation.  The next time you are feeling down, try repeating a few positive affirmations and see how you feel.
