PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is the most effective HIV prevention strategy. The one pill, once-a-day medication is easily accessible at Vivent Health and we are here to help you get and stay on PrEP. PrEP is available to anyone at risk of acquiring HIV.

There are several reasons to make the decision to start PrEP. Many people on the medication feel empowered and more comfortable knowing they are protecting themselves from HIV. At Vivent Health, we will work with you to make sure you can access and afford PrEP, whether you have insurance or not.

Are there any side effects to taking PrEP?

Most people on PrEP do not report any side effects and if they do, symptoms usually resolve in a few weeks. In clinical studies for PrEP, the most common side effects were headache (7%), abdominal pain (4%) and weight loss (3%). More serious side effects are related to kidney function and bone mineral density. Your provider will discuss with you and monitor potential side effects.
What is the commitment to taking PrEP?

When taking PrEP you must commit to taking the medication every day. When PrEP is started it takes up to seven days to reach high levels of HIV protection. If a daily dose is missed, the level of HIV protection can decrease. You must also commit to follow-up visits with one of our providers at least every three months to get tested for HIV and STIs, to evaluate the need to continue PrEP and to receive medication refills.
What should I expect at my first PrEP visit?
You may choose to set up your first visit with a PrEP navigator to discuss your interest and to learn more about PrEP. If you are interested in starting PrEP, schedule an appointment with one of our PrEP providers.
At your first appointment you will likely:
- Complete paperwork
- Discuss the use of PrEP
- Review your health history
- Get your vitals checked and undergo a physical exam
- Get tested for HIV and other STIs
- Do bloodwork
- Receive a prescription for PrEP, same day, that you can fill at our pharmacy or a pharmacy of your choice
Can I afford PrEP?

Our PrEP cost sharing assistance program can help make PrEP more affordable for you. Whether it is the cost of the prescription, medical visit, medical tests or copay, we can work with you to explore financial options. We can also assist with insurance questions around coverage, benefits and denied claims. Most private and commercial insurance plans, as well as Medicaid, cover the cost of PrEP. If you don’t have insurance, we can help with that too.
What else should I know about PrEP?

It is important to follow up regularly with a medical provider if you are on PrEP. It is not to be treated as a “morning-after pill,” or mistaken as post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). PrEP does not protect against gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, genital warts, herpes or hepatitis C. To get the most out of PrEP, take it as prescribed and at the same time every day. PrEP can be taken with or without food.
