Vivent Health Denounces Anti-LGBTQ Supreme Court Ruling

On today, the last day of Pride Month, the Supreme Court’s conservative majority ruled that creative businesses can refuse services to LGBTQ people based upon their personal beliefs. The case of 303 Creative Solutions v. Elenis involved a claim by a graphic designer that Colorado’s LGBTQ nondiscrimination law violates her freedom of speech because she could hypothetically be asked to design a wedding website for same gender couples. By siding with her, the Court ignores the very real discrimination that queer and trans people face every day and effectively gives a green light for many businesses to shut their doors to LGBTQ patrons.

This decision is part of a growing wave of anti-LGBTQ attacks nationwide. More than 600 anti-LGBTQ bills were filed by state lawmakers this year alone, with most targeting trans youth and adults. It is no coincidence that LGBTQ communities, and especially trans people of color, also continue to experience worse HIV-related and other health disparities.
